When To "Toss" Your Older Grooming Goods

Nothing lasts forever. Even your favorite shaving creams, hair goos and body washes have expiration dates. On that note, it may be time to toss some older grooming products, free up some storage space and replenish your stock with ingredients that really work for hair and skin. But how do know when a product is really past it's prime? Here’s a quick guide to keeping your look and formulations fresh.

Urth Face Balm SPF 15

  1. Lotions and potions can last two to three years. But once opened, the shelf life is about a year. If you've popped the top, but haven’t used that moisturizer, shaving balm or pre-shave oil --throw it out. Lotions like sunscreen, retinoids, AHA’s (alpha hydroxy acids) and those containing Vitamin C have active ingredients and expiration dates. Don’t get burned by taking a chance that just maybe your three-year-old sunscreen will work.

  1. It's important to always have your favorite products on hand. If you're not changing your razor blade (between every five to 10 shaves) and replacing your Grooming Lounge The Shavior post-shave treatment (although you should run through this without issue), your mug will pay you back with a face full of ingrown hairs and shaving bumps. It's easier to stay locked and loaded when you take advantage of replenishment programs. Your go-to products arrive at your front door and you never run out.

  1. You can stretch the shelf life of grooming products by storing them in a cool, dry place. Heat and humidity will take a toll on their efficacy. Direct sunlight and extreme temperatures can be especially bad for colognes and in fact, alter the juice. Keep your bottles out of the bathroom with the lids and caps closed tight and you won't have to throw those scents away (make sense?). They might even keep you smelling scentsational for five years or more.

  1. The good news is that your deodorant can really go the distance as it’s already formulated with antiseptic and anti-bacterial ingredients. Shampoos, bar soaps, and styling products can last a little longer too. Just as long as they’re not exposed to bacteria in the air or from your fingers. Germ and mold collecting loofahs should be replaced every 3-4 weeks, toothbrushes every 3-4 months and toilet brushes after six months, depending on how much you use them. If you come down with the stomach flu, replace them all immediately.

  1. We don’t have to tell you, when it gets gross it’s time to throw it out. A dried up clay mask or an old lip balm you found in a coat from last winter needs to get the old heave-ho. Also, don't forget to check your gym bag and Dopp kit for and ditch the grooming products that have seen better days. When in doubt, throw it out.
